Victory Village Day Care Center has been providing
high quality child care to parents in the University of North
Carolina community for over 50 years. The Center was begun in
1953 as a parent cooperative. For 45 years, Victory Village was
located off of Manning Drive in Chapel Hill, very near the neighborhood
of the same name that housed married students after World War
II. The center provided care for 65 children at that site.
In August, 1998, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
and UNC Health Care Systems opened the University Child Care Center,
located near the William and Ida Friday Continuing Education Center
on the University campus. The University and Health Care System
contracted with Victory Village Day Care Center to manage the
facility. The University and the Hospital shared costs for the
construction of the building; tuition and fees cover the Center's
operating costs, including staffing expenses. The new Center houses
nearly twice the number of children and the staff has more than
doubled.
